Thank you all for the landslide of submissions we received for the free aerial shoot competition! The lucky winner of the free aerial shoot is Philip Kantor from Hout Bay. Your shoot will be delivered shortly and some images will feature on our new year's newsletter in 2010.

After the positive response we received for our first competition, we decided to do it again, except that this time it'll be the ONE HUNDREDTH person who clicks here, or sends a reply to info@aerialphoto.co.za, and includes the subject line "DECEMBER FREE AERIAL SHOOT COMPETITION", that will be the lucky winner!

Once again, the shoot will consist of 5 aerial images supplied, of a single site or subject specified by the winner. This offer ends on 31st January 2010. Terms and conditions apply.

COMPANY NEWS

Keith true to aviators' form has moved swiftly to secure the hand of Marietha and they were married in Riebeeck Kasteel during July. Kerry has completed her BBA and awaits her results…

On the sporting front, both Ant and Keith were in Swellendam recently for the Coronation Double Century 208 km team cycling race in late November. They were also spotted sneaking in some high altitude secret training on top of Matroosberg in the last heavy snowfall (actually it was more “let’s hurl snowballs at the boss”).

JEEP (Century City) also launched their new MANIAC sponsored 4x4 course for the ambitious JEEP owner.

The Aerial Perspective would like to extend a warm welcome to the husband-and-wife team of Kobus and Nikki Oosthuizen (bottom centre and left). The will be joining our ranks as our Johannesburg representatives, and will be establishing a more permanent presence for us in Gauteng and surrounds.

Kobus is also a keen aviator and is currently putting the finishing touches to his Commercial Pilot's License. Nikki brings with her extensive experience in Marketing and Brand Management.
An unusual view of a green and summery Johannesburg Skyline, captured on our monthly Johannesburg flight last week. In the foreground are the SABC (left) and the familiar Brixton Tower (right). In the background, just to the left of centre, are the JG Strijdom Tower (better known as the Hillbrow Tower) and Ponte, with the Johannesburg CBD to the right.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

The south-easter and spring time in Cape Town are practically synonymous, but when it hits a 60 year high of 130 kph (technically hurricane force is in excess of 118 kph) then it’s a little excessive for even our Cape Doctor which over the period of 25/6 October wreaked havoc over wide areas in the Western Cape and particularly the Cape Peninsula and environs.

So what’s the deal with such a severe storm?
There’s something to be said with all the recent focus on the International Day of Climate Action. On Saturday 24 October concerned people from all over the globe united to perform passive protest and create awareness to the plight of the planet. The figure 350 was formed by thousands of people the world over at multiple locations. The Aerial Perspective flew the Cape Town sortie on behalf of The Bateleurs conservation organisation and the international Environmental Awarenesss Group, 350.org.
The significance of the number 350 is that this is what scientists agree is the highest tolerable atmospheric concentration of Carbon Dioxide for human life, in parts per million. At present, the level is considerably higher than this at 390pmm, and it's still rising! We're already starting to see the effects, such as melting glaciers and polar ice caps, and an increase in the frequency of violent storms and floods. Drastic action is needed to reduce the concentration of Carbon Dioxide in our atmosphere if we are to avoid worse in the future. For more information, visit the 350.org website at www.350.org.

FINAL APPROACH TO 2010!

With 191 days to go the final tweaks are being completed to put the finishing touches to South Africa’s soccer 2010 showcase. Our South African construction industry has done us proud.
GREENPOINT STADIUM
In order to minimise the visual impact of the stadium on one of Cape Town's most scenic areas, the designers wanted to sink the entire stadium into the ground. This proved impossible, however, as it would have taken 2 years to blast a large enough hole into the hard rock under Greenpoint Common. The stadium has nevertheless been designed with the aim of disrupting the views from surrounding buildings as little as possible.

Eveything looks well on track for the official handover on 14th December 2009.

Cape Town International Airport
The new R1.6 billion Central Terminal Building was opened recently and will be used by both International and Domestic passengers. All departing passengers now pass through a single check-in area with 120 counters and 20 self-service check-in machines. Other new additions include air-bridges and a new fully-automated baggage sorting system capable of handling 3000 bags an hour.
Koeberg Interchange
The upgrade of the N1 interchange at Koeberg Road, Paarden Island is progressing well.

Preparations are underway to throw the slab spanning the many railway lines passing through the intersection. When complete, this will be the longest single span over a railway line in the Country.
Hospital Bend
The upgrade of Hospital Bend is scheduled for completion in March 2010, and forms part of the larger N2 Corridor Project, intended to ease travel between Cape Town International Airport and the City.
Soccer City
Soccer City, on the outskirts of Soweto, will seat 94 700 spectators, and has created 1300 permanent jobs.
Gautrain
The Gautrain will, when completed, consist of 80km of brand-new track, running through 10 new stations, and is expected to carry approximately 3200 passengers at peak times on its 24 trains.
Durban Stadium
This pic of the Durban Stadium comes to us from our associate in that part of the world, Steve McCurrach. For more info on him and his company, Airserv, visit his website.

ACTUNG U-BOAT! AND OTHER INTERESTING IMAGES

From Ant’s desktop: “In the midst of completing a sortie overhead the container basin in Cape Town docks, the unmistakeable silhouette of a German WWII U-Boat pulled my attention off the instrument panel and flying for a double check that I wasn’t seeing things! Sure enough, after executing a steady turn onto target, there she was all lined up in my Canon sights”.
The U-boat is actually a set being used in the 2 Oceans production "Laconia". The film recounts an incident in World War 2 in which the German U-boat, U-156, torpedoed and sank the British luxury liner "Laconia". Unbeknownst to the U-boat captain, the vessel was carrying 1800 Italian prisoners-of-war. While rescuing survivors, and flying the Red Cross flag, the U-boat was attacked by an American B-24. As a result of this, both sides abandonded the practice of rescuing civilian survivors of torpedoed ships.
Pride South Pacific
The Pride Foramer exploration rig Pride South Pacific is visiting Cape Town Harbour for refurbishment, due to be completed in mid-December this year. Then she's off to Equatorial Guinea.
Cape Quarter
The truly spectacular Cape Quarter resurrected and rebuilt (from below the ground up, but using the original and restored Somerset Road façade) by R+N Master Builders opened it’s historic doors once again to trade, only this time graced with unrivalled splendour.

The entire project, stores and romantic allure they have recreated really have to be seen to be appreciated. Do yourself a favour – go!
New Tug "Ochiyami"
Damen Shipyards' new tug, the Ochiyami was launched recently in Cape Town (left). We captured her recently undergoing sea trials, and testing out her firefighting pumps in spectacular fashion.
Safmarine Container Vessel underway off Cape Town
Captured in planform from our high-altitude viewpoint on the climb for Flight Level 105, is this Safmarine container vessel, making its way to Cape Town harbour (above).
Ever wonder where your money's made?

Well, it's here, at the SA Mint in Midrand...
The Medupi Power Station near Lephahale in Limpopo Province will be the world's largest dry-cooled coal-fired power station, and its six turbines will be capable of generating a total of 4800MW of electricity. The first turbine is due to be commissioned in 2012, followed by the remaining five at nine-month intervals.
Coal from Exxaro's Grootgeluk mine, destined for electricity generation at the existing Medupi Power Station. The mine is situated just to the north of the Power Station, and is contracted to supply Eskom with 14.6 Million tons of coal per year, for the next 40 years. The Bulk Carrier Seli 1 ran aground off Blouberg in heavy seas in the early hours of 8 September. She had been awaiting engine repairs and when her anchor cable broke, the crew were unable to prevent her running aground off Dolphin Beach. Fortunately all the fuel on board was quickly salvaged to avert an environmental disaster, and currently operations are underway to salvage the cargo of coal. The fate of the vessel itself, however, is still undecided.
The Blue Water Gas Platform Glas Dowr, which was for several months a familiar sight for those passing by Cape Town Harbour, was towed out on Saturday 19 October, in preparation for repositioning to the Far East. "Glas Dowr" means Blue Water in Gaelic. At anchor in the entrance to Lambert's Bay Harbour, these fishing boats bask in the early morning sunlight with their nets deployed. The rocky outcrop visible near the top of the image is the Marcus Island Gannet colony.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The Aerial Perspective is proud to be involved in various community initiatives. From helping out at charity events like the Jeep fun day held recently at Century City, to volunteering with the NSRI and Hout Bay Community Policing Forum, we believe it's important to "give something back".

The informal settlement of Dontse Yakhe, which has developed above Imizamu Yethu, Hout Bay, is a cause for concern. A lack of infrastructure means several unsafe and unhealthy conditions prevail, such as raw sewage running down the slope through the streets of Imizamu Yethu, and shacks being so close together (right) that it's impossible for emergency services to access the area.
